Artists Statement
My photography is eclectic in subject matter and style, ranging from still lives to landscape and documentary. I have worked in photography for over thirty years as a freelance photo-journalist, part-time tutor, and MA course leader at Norwich University College of the Arts.
In 2010 I returned to my practice full time and have since been pre-occupied with a major project investigating relationships between man-made and natural landscape features of wetland regions in Norfolk and northern Holland. The project is called Neither Land nor Water and the plan is to extend the work into other watery areas of the UK and Europe.
I’ve been influenced by many photographers and artists, in particular Walker Evans, John Davies, Fay Godwin, Lee Friedlander, David Bailey – all people whose work I looked at as an art student during the 1970s. Malcolm Bradbury used to say that the struggle with influence was part of the pleasure of finding your own way, and he wasn’t wrong.
