Artists Statement
After 30 years teaching and lecturing in Art and Design, I took early retirement & begun to concentrate on my painting. My work is inspired by living and working on the Northumberland coast and now, in the Wilds of Redesdale near the border of Scotland. I have always been fascinated by the patterns of sand on the beach. Random piles of seaweed & driftwood, in my mind, is order and chaos together and becomes an inspiration for my paintings.
The images that I create use a wide variety of materials eg sand, soil, coal dust, and driftwood often embedded in the paint surfaces. I want my paintings to be as natural as possible and rarely use a brush but often use a finger, knife, trowel, sand ,plaster, spray paints to create impasto paint surfaces. I have experimented with Holographic Foils in paintings in order to simulate the wonderful light of Northumberland.
Moving to Redesdale I have been inspired by interaction of man and nature, as in the Otterburn Army Range’s military roads, bunkers and old tanks, contrast with wild crags, quarries, moorland and forest creating a wonderful tapestry at different times of year. Rock strata, strange cloud formations, moody sunsets, reflections in rivers and lakes all have me reaching for camera or sketchbook.
The “Land of Far Horizons”, Northumberland has light which enhances the tactile quality of the Landscape no matter whatever the season. I hope my work stimulates a wide range of perception and feelings for this "Land of Far Horizons".
