Artists Statement
Central to my journey as an artist is the self-belief that full potential will one day
be arrived at. This is a delusion that I am only too happy to perpetuate because
this is the driver that pushes me out of doors on a January morning in sub zero temperatures.
For the past four years I have painted exclusively out of doors come rain wind or shine.
And I'm learning all the time.
Plein air work comes with its own unique challenges, frustrations and limitations.
When things are going according to plan and the senses are all working overtime
there can come a moment of peak awareness in a painting session that I find I'm
usually unable to attain in the studio. Conversely, nature can conspire to wreak havoc.
It is this duality between elation and misery that I'm always trying to harness.
The overriding quest, trite as it may sound, is to capture the light and temperature
of whatever I happen to be painting, within a given time frame.
I'm currently painting landscapes in my area of South Norfolk. I'm unashamedly
sentimental in my approach to finding what I want to paint and then rather less
so when I start painting. I do have a bit of a soft spot for agricultural buildings
of just about every persuasion, as well as churchyards, heathland, scrap heaps,
Norfolk marl pits, disused airfields, sea defences, dry docks and just about
every conceivable nook and cranny of undisturbed wasteland in my immediate vicinity.
