This is a small painting of a field in winter. It was painted in December 2008. I showed this to one of the old farmers in our village, and he knew straight away which field it was. It was very very cold painting this, and my feet were like ice afterwards. The sky was demanding and took time to build up in layers. A little blue is just breaking through at the top of the painting. The edge of this field is curved, which is a little unusual, and the composition works really well in this painting. The eye is taken into the painting along the soft curving edge of the field, and is drawn to the tree on the left, which acts to keep the viewer in the painting. From here the eye is sent up into the sky, or bounce back to the central clump of bushes. The focal point is rather to the left of centre, but then you break and wander off across the horizon and the misty distant trees on the right. The right side is quieter in dynamic, until you re-engage with the strong stripes of the hedge, boarder and field at the very bottom right of the composition, which squeezes your attention back along the edge of the field, and into the painting to the tree on the left again. Within the sky are also gentle diagonal shifts, which move the attention through the composition. This was all observed. Nature truly is the greatest teacher. I only paint what I see, but I think the skill in this painting is in the initial moment of recognition of the potential of this view to work as a painting.
