Plot Lane

About the artwork

This is a painting of Plot Lane. Plot Lane is a lane that runs along the bottom of our village. At one time, every member of the village was entitled to a plot to grow their vegetables, and the plots were all adjacent to plot lane, hence the name. I have often walked around the village, and along plot lane, and have often thought to paint it, but this is the only painting of it to date. One reason for this is that it can be busy with dog walkers and is a track where farm vehicles often need access. Once you set up and start painting you ideally need some time undistracted so as to focus and move the painting on. This was painted in February 2010, and although the sky is quite blue, it was very cold. In fact this painting took many sittings, and on the first sitting the ground was covered in sleet. You can see some fencing to the left. In this paddock is a horse, who was very highly strung. Horses don't like painters. I think they get confused, and are not sure what you are. I have had several incidents where riders have had to work really hard to coax their beast past me, while the horse is looking at my easel as thought it were the devil incarnate. This horse was small, but would charge you. Luckily it would stop just before you, but it was alarming. As the painting progressed we became quite friendly though. The horse did get used to me and would just go about his business. There is a naive intensity about these clouds which I like.
