Mellifluous

Artwork Details

About the artwork

Painted in May 2010. This painting took several sittings. At the front on the left are two bushes, and these first attracted my attention because a week earlier they were in blossom. I used to pass them regularly as they are visible from the main road to our village. I was planning to paint them, but by the time I got to them the blossom had all dropped. Still I liked the spot, and the simplicity of the composition, and yet the complexity within it so I stayed and made a painting. Actually this painting contains a railway line. Just beyond the ridge of earth is a railway track, and occasionally I would find I would look up and be looking at the carriages of a passing train ! I find this curious, that there is an invisible railway line in this painting, which is really there and yet not show. It says something about perception. Usually I am looking for places which are much more remote, but there was something about this field and earth ridge, that I found alluring. The sky has a violet quality. There are layers of luminescence. It is complex and containing very subtle shifts of hue. There is a warmth, and a silky quality about the light and the sky, and I wanted a name which would reflect this silky warmth in nature, and the word mellifluous seemed right.
